This section describes the main differences between the Categories and gives a brief description of each.

Single-Board Computers

Single-Board Computers

Single-board computers differ from single-board microcontrollers, by their chip architecture. Single-board computers have a microprocessor, memory, input/output connections and most of these are not embedded on a single integrated circuit (IC). Single-board computers have more RAM, and a higher CPU speed. Some boards feature nonvolatile memory to store an operating system. They often are capable of running a full operating system like Linux or Windows. Some of them also contain GPIO pins to interface to sensors or actuators. See Single-Board Computers

Single-Board Microcontrollers

Single-Board Microcontrollers

Microcontrollers were designed to perform a single limited task and are therefore consume a lot less energy than single-board computers. Single-board microcontrollers are expansions boards that were built around a microcontroller integrated circuit(IC). The microcontroller contains its memory and processor on a single chip, which makes it cheaper, but also less powerful. The boards almost always come with GPIO connectors that allow you to connect sensors and actuators. The boards do not run an operating system and have Software that allows the user to program the system from a computer over a USB cable. See Single-Board Microcontrollers

Useful Electronic Components

Useful Electronic Components

General electronic components are described in this section. The electronic components allow you to switch between inputs, measure things or interact with things. Sample components that fit into this category are: voltage level shifter, speaker, motor drivers, etc. There are two main types of electronic components, active and passive components. Passive components (like the resistor, capacitor) do not require external power to function. Active components (like motor drivers and other integrated circuit components) .
