Take a look at the PNMini, a tiny power supply module for makers. It comes in 0.5A and 2A configuration that supports input voltage ranges from 3.5-27V and converts them to output voltage between 2.5V-15V. The output is set to 3.3V by default, but can be changed by rearranging a few onboard resistors. The board can output positive and negative voltages.

The board features a 92% efficiency (compare to 73% for LM2596), meaning more power will end up as useful stuff, rather than heat, giving you more battery life. PNMini has robust self protection features, and is really tiny. The early bird price started at $7 (but were all gone at the time of writing) and up. For more information take a look at the already funded Kickstarter Campaign (42 days to go).
